Indian and Pakistani soldiers exchange fire for the fifth night in a row

Indian and Pakistani soldiers exchange fire for the fifth night in a row

As on previous nights, the Indian army reported that Pakistani troops opened small-arms fire on its positions near the Line of Control in Kashmir, the de facto border between the two countries. The Indian army said its troops had "responded in a measured and effective manner to the provocation." New Delhi reported no casualties.

There was no immediate confirmation from Pakistan.

Border closure

Tensions between India and Pakistan have been running high since the April 22 attack by gunmen in Pahalgam , Indian-administered Kashmir, which left 26 people dead. Without waiting for a claim of responsibility, New Delhi blamed Islamabad for the attack, the deadliest targeting civilians in the Muslim-majority region in decades. Pakistan denied any involvement and called for a "neutral investigation" into the circumstances.

The two countries launched retaliatory attacks against each other and ordered the border closure. India set a Tuesday deadline for Pakistani citizens to leave its territory.

Analysts fear that the belligerent statements could lead to possible military action.
