"Welcome to 1683." That's the name of the major event at the Citadel of Besançon this weekend. Three days devoted entirely to the Grand Siècle and Louis XIV's visit to the capital of Franche-Comté, at a time when work on Vauban's fortress on Mont Saint-Étienne was nearing completion.

The year 1683 in the old Spanish city. The second conquest of Franche-Comté had been completed nine years earlier. Formerly part of the County of Burgundy, the territory of Franche-Comté had been officially annexed to the Kingdom of France since the Treaty of Nijmegen (1678). Begun just under a decade earlier, the construction of the Citadel, overseen by the Marquis de Vauban, was nearing completion. A valid reason for Louis XIV to travel to Besançon.
