One February day, near Bourg-en-Bresse (Ain), in freezing rain and fog thick enough to cut with a knife, a refrigerated truck loaded with yogurts missed a turn and went off. The driver, a Russian, was killed instantly, even though he had neither alcohol nor drugs in his system. In the refrigerated trailer, in addition to the yogurts, the police discovered "a 25-liter blue plastic drum, capped with a black lid whose seal was guaranteed by a metal ring." Inside, "a forest of tiny hands, little feet, little heads with unfinished faces smaller than a fist […], fetuses."
The investigation is entrusted to Captain Adhémar de Saint-Rémand and his deputy, Lieutenant Daphné Quenot, of the Paris Financial Research and Investigation Brigade. Two completely opposite personalities, but who respect and complement each other. Adhémar is an upright and honest man, a bit uptight and a tea lover, while Daphné is exuberant, rather inclined towards alcohol and especially towards women.
