Colombia is in an area exposed to tropical cyclones, especially during the season from June 1 to November 30, so it's necessary to intensify surveillance in some areas of the country to mitigate the effects . Will the storms become more frequent? These were the comments from IDEAM.

IDEAM updated the National Tropical Cyclone Alert Protocol, which establishes continuous monitoring and the issuance of early warnings for the population. Based on this analysis, and in conjunction with the National Hurricane Center, they determined the projections for the coming months.

The agencies have established that between 13 and 19 tropical storms are expected to form, of which between 6 and 10 could become hurricanes, and 3 to 5 could reach major hurricane status. Furthermore, this season is expected to be more active than usual, with a 60% probability of increased activity.

What should be done when a cyclone hits?

According to the National Tropical Cyclone Response Plan and official protocols, some measures should be taken such as: ▪️Follow the instructions of the authorities, which may include preventive evacuations, road closures, suspension of activities and other protection measures. ▪️Prepare an emergency kit with drinking water, non-perishable food, medicines, important documents, a flashlight, batteries, and adequate clothing. ▪️Secure the home by reinforcing doors and windows, removing objects that can fly away with the wind and locating the family in a safe place inside the house or in shelters. ▪️Avoid unnecessary travel during the emergency to avoid putting personal integrity at risk and facilitate rescue and care efforts. ▪️Coordinate with neighbors and the community to support each other and facilitate communication in case of emergency. ▪️Keep yourself permanently informed through official sources such as IDEAM, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) and local authorities to learn about the status of the cyclone and any alerts issued.
