Microplastics are tiny plastic particles, measuring less than 5 millimeters in diameter , that come from the degradation of larger products (such as bottles or bags) or that are manufactured directly in that size, such as those commonly used in cosmetics or textiles.
These particles are present in oceans, rivers, soil, and even the air, and have been detected in marine organisms, food, and the human body, raising concerns about their potential effects on health and the environment, according to the World Health Organization.
On this, Tracey Woodruff, a researcher in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, specializing in environmental pollutants, said that "probably the most important thing you can do to reduce your exposure to microplastics is to eat food prepared at home, from scratch ." “ When I travel, I pack my own lunch. I usually bring an apple and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I buy peanut butter in glass jars, which I reuse for food storage and as water glasses. I also bring my own bags to the farmers market ,” the researcher said.

The expert points out that heat helps break down chemical bonds. " We know that burning plastic releases toxic substances and pollutes the air ." She also emphasized that she avoids using non-stick pans made with PFAS (perfluoroalkyl substances), preferring to use " a clay rice cooker, stainless steel pots and pans, and a cast iron skillet that belonged to my grandmother. It still works perfectly, and I can fry an egg without any problems. I use wooden and stainless steel cookware and avoid black plastics ." The obstetrician was also emphatic about nutrition, saying it's important to have a plant-based diet. “ I avoid red meat and ruminant animals like lamb or goat. I also focus on eating whole grains and legumes. I eat fish, but I generally prefer smaller ones because larger ones (like tuna or swordfish) live longer and can accumulate contaminants like mercury .” See more: Without leaving Bogotá: the dream island and the azure sea you can already see.
Another tip, given by specialist Woodruff, is to clean the dust: “ An effective way to reduce the amount of dust in your home is to use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter ,” but she also suggested wiping the dust with a damp cloth.
Thus, the scientist points out that it is better not to use products with scents , because, she points out, “ some companies place fragrances in tiny microplastic capsules so that the aroma lasts longer ,” Woodruff concludes.
