Eugenio Baena, sports journalist and father of former skater Cecilia Baena, dies.

Colombian sports commentator Eugenio Baena , father of former skater Cecilia Baena, died in Cartagena at the age of 71.

Baena had been hospitalized for several days after undergoing cardiac surgery .

“ Eugenio Baena passed away at the age of 71, bidding farewell to the world of sports journalism after years of working at Caracol Radio, leaving behind a proud legacy in Colombian radio ,” was the radio station's message.

He was known for covering football, baseball, and boxing , sports in which he was one of the top-rated on the Atlantic coast.

Baena died at the Neurodinamia Clinic , where he spent the last two days in the intensive care unit (ICU), after suffering a heart attack in the early hours of last Wednesday .

" He was referred to that medical center from the New Hospital in Bocagrande, where he initially arrived with his family when he began to feel severe chest pain while at home ," reported the newspaper 'El Heraldo'.

And he added: " In Neurodynamics, he underwent two catheterizations to treat a pair of blocked arteries. After completing the procedure, which involves inserting a catheter, a thin, flexible tube, into a blood vessel, Baena was taken to the ICU, where he died this Friday ."

El Heraldo reported that Baena was part of Caracol Radio, where he participated in the program "El VBAR Caracol" and the broadcasts of "El Fenómeno del Fútbol" on the same network.

Likewise, he continued to broadcast his popular program, "Buenos días deportes," through his own digital platforms, and covered Real Cartagena matches in partnership with Caracol and Mediotiempo.co.

Eugenio Baena was key in Cecilia's sporting career, making her a multiple world skating champion . He always supported her and was by her side in these kinds of competitions, as well as in the Olympic cycle events in which 'Chechi' participated.

When her father fell ill, Cecilia wrote the following message on her social media: " A story that has yet to be finished telling. A heart that doubted, but did not give up. A man who heard the rumor of the abyss... and chose to stay. Because in this Caribbean of ours, where the real is confused with the miraculous, there are those who walk along the edge without falling. Or they fall, but get up with their soul intact ."
