Women and Cinema celebrates 37 years with a new edition

From September 24th to 28th , a new edition of Women and Cinema will be held at multiple venues throughout Buenos Aires. This year, the festival celebrates 37 years of history with a broad, diverse, and free program. Launched in 1988 as part of the first International Women's Film Festival in Mar del Plata, the event has established itself over time as a unique space to promote and disseminate works by women in the audiovisual field.
“We continue filming, creating. We film with passion, with rebellion, with desire, with what exists and with what is invented,” the organizers express, reaffirming the spirit of a project that positions cinema as an act of freedom and a space for plurality.
With the support of Impulso Cultural y Mecenazgo, this year's call reached a record: 189 short films, 58 video minutes, and 33 feature films in the Work in Progress competition.
The National Panorama brings together 22 recent feature films from Argentine cinema, including La Quinta by Silvina Schnicer , The Longest Summer in the World by Alejandra Lipoma and Romina Vlachoff, Senda India by Daniela Seggiaro, The Arrival of the Son by Cecilia Atán and Valeria Pivato , and The Dance of Impact by Camila Toker. Titles that were previously winners of the Work in Progress will also be screened, such as Boletín Interno by Meri Franco Mao, Cuidadoras by Martina Matzkin and Gabriela Uassouf, and Wacay, Mujeres del Tobacal by Belén Revollo.
The festival's program, directed by Annamaría Muchnik, is completed with 33 short films in competition, 21 video-minutes, and an International Panorama that includes premieres such as Memoria de un cuerpo que arde (Memory of a Body That Burns ) by Antonella Sudasassi Furniss (Costa Rica), Senhoritas (Senhoritas) by Mykaela Plotkin (Brazil), La falla (Fault ) by Alana Simões (Mexico), and Un amor (A Love) by Isabel Coixet (Spain). There will also be a special series, "Une femme est une femme" (A Woman Is a Woman), dedicated to the pioneers of French cinema.

This year's juries will be composed of prominent figures in culture and film. For feature films, the juries will be led by Liliana Mazure, Cristina Banegas, and Estela Díaz, and the Eva Landek Award, granted by the Ministry of Women and Diversity of the Province of Buenos Aires, will be presented.
In the short film category, María Alché, Sebastián De Caro, Lorena Vega , Vanina Spataro, and María Victoria Menis will be jurors; while Paula Morel Kristof, Silvina Hermosa, and Toia Bonino will participate in the video short category, with the Sara Facio Graciela García Romero Award.
The Work in Progress section will feature a jury composed of Martín Grignaschi, Gustavo Pomeranec, Mercedes Rizzuti, Gisela Chicolino, Gabriel Lahaye, Franca González, and Carolina Álvarez.
Since its inception, Women and Cinema has aimed to create a space in a field historically dominated by male voices. Year after year, the festival upholds this mission, supporting filmmakers throughout all stages of their projects and highlighting unique stories and perspectives.
In the words of its organizers, the filmmakers' cameras "don't just show: they challenge, move, make people laugh, make them uncomfortable, and embrace them." That spirit will once again be present in this five-day edition, which will offer a vibrant overview of audiovisual productions by women in Argentina and around the world.
*The 37th Women and Film Festival will take place from September 24 to 28, with free admission at the Atlas Patio Bullrich, CC 25 de Mayo, Recoleta Cultural Center, Friends of Bellas Artes, and Malba theaters.
