4 out of 10 student children in Mexico are overweight or obese.

The Secretary of Public Education, Mario Delgado Carrillo , reported that through the "Live Healthy, Live Happy" strategy, 2.7 million basic education students have been surveyed, and that according to preliminary results, it was shown that 4 out of 10 boys and girls students in Mexico are overweight or obese.
Also, the official said, it was found that 6 out of 10 have cavities; 4 out of 10 have visual acuity problems; and 1 out of 10 are underweight.
At the "People's Morning Conference" held at the National Palace, Delgado Carrillo explained that the strategy, which began nationwide on March 12, aims to provide a digital record for each child, which includes weight and height measurements to calculate the body mass index. In addition, a talk on tooth brushing is offered, fluoride is applied, cavities are checked, and a visual assessment is performed.
To date, 2,760,333 children have been counted in 17,588 primary schools, with 7,744 confirmed brigades with IMSS nurses. He added that in the states of Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Zacatecas, Chiapas and Guerrero, Guanajuato, and Michoacán They are delayed due to the teachers' conflict that occurred in recent weeks.
In this regard, the head of the SEP reported that a digital school health record is being created for each child.
"(...) We are taking great care with the issue of data confidentiality. We are going to have this digital file that will be updated year after year and will allow us to evaluate the evolution of weight, height, vision, and oral health of all children in Mexico. This is also what I was telling you... this is the application that allows for extensive data exploitation, allowing us to detect if in some areas of our country, for example, there is a greater problem with visual acuity or overweight or underweight," he highlighted.
David Kershenobich, Secretary of Health, emphasized that the "Healthy Living" Program aims to ensure that health is preventative "and not merely a treatment for diseases."
"This is precisely an example of how to prevent disease; it's a program based on scientific evidence," he said while speaking about metabolic health in the Treasury Hall.
