Rescuing a sonic gem

Rescuing a sonic gem
▲ The Wanamaker organ, a sonorous jewel with more than 28,000 pipes and declared a National Historic Landmark, was nearly silenced after the closure of the department store that for years occupied the historic Wanamaker Building in Philadelphia, United States. To prevent this cultural icon from disappearing, countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, artistic director of the Philadelphia Opera, is organizing a series of concerts to revive the musical instrument before the building is transformed into a shopping and residential center. The first event will be on September 7 and will include opera, ballet, theater, and drag. The organ was built in 1904 and expanded in 1909. Photo AP
