At the Teufelsloch, which locals like to call the gateway to the underworld, the path leads into the mountain. With a total length of 3,000 meters, the Teufelshöhle near Pottenstein is one of the largest caves in Franconian Switzerland. The underworld of the show cave features impressive cave rooms connected by narrow passageways. Things get exciting in the Bärenhöhle, where bone remains of cave bears and an impressive skeleton replica of one specimen can be admired. These animals lived here more than 30,000 years ago.
During a guided tour of the stalactite cave, visitors can also admire the enormous stalactite ornamentation that has been growing here for over two million years. The Barbarossa Hall, one of the cave's gigantic cavities, is particularly abundant.
Attention: Even in summer you should definitely take a jacket with you, because the temperature in the cave is around nine degrees Celsius all year round.

If you're looking to combine the romanticism of half-timbered houses with a spectacular motif, the village of Tüchersfeld is the place to be. About an hour's drive from Nuremberg lies this idyllic village in the Püttlachtal valley. What's special about it: The picturesque half-timbered houses, together with gigantic rock formations that jut vertically into the sky, create a bizarre picture.
The scenery of the rock village is so spectacular that it's a popular photo subject. The rock formations date back to the Jurassic period, about 200 million years ago. At that time, the ocean dominated this patch of land, and the rocks are remnants of the reef that existed at that time. A visit to the Franconian Switzerland Museum, stunningly situated on the cliff, in a building complex dating back to the 18th century, should be on your to-do list.
