California: Why giant dinosaur sculptures stand in the middle of the desert in Borrego Springs

When you explore one of the many, often vast, state parks in the USA , you'll primarily encounter nature and endless expanses. However, in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in Southern California , you might even encounter a dinosaur or a giant scorpion.
Don't worry, there is no danger because these are huge art installations.
These are located near Borrego Springs, a remote oasis surrounded by Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. If you arrive in spring, the otherwise barren desert transforms into a colorful sea of flowers.
The night sky is equally impressive, as Borrego Springs is the first community in California to be recognized as an "International Dark Sky Community." This means that light pollution is so minimal that you'll find ideal conditions for stargazing.

Despite the city being nearby, Borrego Springs is a great place to go stargazing – including prehistoric models.

The giant sculptures found in the desert landscape make for ideal photo opportunities against the starry sky. Artist Ricardo Breceda created and installed over 130 metal sculptures here. They include prehistoric animals, as well as mystical creatures and historical figures. One dragon is even over 100 meters long and appears to be slithering through the desert sand.
The sculptures are collectively known as "Galleta Meadows" and are spread around Borrego Springs. Dennis Avery acquired the land in the 1990s. He wanted to protect it from development and commissioned the artist Breceda to create the sculptures. The idea was to transform the desert land into an open gallery, which he ultimately achieved. The sculptures are accessible 24/7.
Some figures can be seen from the road, while others are only accessible via dirt roads. You can explore the gallery by car, bike, or on foot. If you need maps or informational materials, you can get them at the State Park Visitor Center. It's best to plan your visit for spring or fall, when the desert isn't too hot.

Borrego Springs is a great day trip destination from San Diego, which is about two hours away. The desert oasis can also be reached from Palm Springs in just over two and a half hours. Always remember to keep your gas tank full and bring water in this region; sometimes, gas stations don't appear for ages.

Some sculptures were also based on real life.

The state park also offers numerous camping options, including the Borrego Palm Canyon Campground and the Tamarisk Grove Campground. If you're looking for even more adventure, backcountry camping is also permitted in the area, so you can camp outside of campgrounds. You should stay within easy reach of roads, maintain a minimum distance from water sources, and avoid building fires on the ground.
