Tying scarves made easy: 7 scarf trends and how to wear them correctly now
Wrap yourself up warm! Here's how to tie a scarf correctly, according to an expert.
From its humble beginnings to current scarf trends , the popular accessory has come a long way. Its origins date back to ancient Egypt, where Queen Nefertiti is said to have worn a woven scarf under her jeweled headdress. Later, men in ancient Rome wore linen handkerchiefs to wipe away sweat, and in various countries throughout history, scarves have been worn to signify military rank or status.
During the reign of Queen Victoria of England (1837–1901), silk scarves became a symbol of luxury and wealth. But it wasn't until the 20th century that this accessory gained prominence as a fashion item in its own right. Style icons of the 1950s and 1960s—Brigitte Bardot, Faye Dunaway, Lauren Bacall, and Bianca Jagger—all wore silk scarves to add a touch of casual glamour to their looks. When Grace Kelly broke her arm in 1956, she even wore a sling made from an Hermès scarf.

Many fashion houses have developed their own style of scarf; Burberry's checks , Etro's paisley patterns, and Alexander McQueen's skulls are all instantly recognizable because each originates from its own era. The latter, for example, became the epitome of the then-popular rock chic style in the 2000s.
From wool to silk , from square to triangle, the market offers a tremendous selection. Natural materials are more durable and less prone to pilling, and "buying vintage scarves is a great way to get unique patterns and colors," says Lauren Friedman, author and illustrator of "50 Ways to Wear a Scarf" (Abrams & Chronicle Books, 2014). "Plus, it's easier to find affordable scarves made from quality materials like pure silk or wool in vintage stores."

No matter how you choose to tie your scarf, the focus when choosing a classic winter scarf should be on the material. Wool or cotton blends are by far the most warming. As for the shape, "elongated rectangular scarves are a good choice when the look calls for something heavier; they break up an outfit charmingly and draw the eye up and down," says Friedman. Alternatively, you can cross the scarf across your chest and elegantly tuck it into your coat like Princess Kate .
