These flat sandals from Menorca will be everywhere in summer 2025.
The first time I wore Menorcan sandals was when I was eleven. I was on holiday in the Balearic Islands with my mum, and they were sold everywhere in the local shops. Every summer I took home souvenirs - that year it was a T-shirt with dolphins, four woven leather bracelets and a pair of these traditional shoes. Back then I didn't know much about fashion. I just took them because I liked them, but I wouldn't have been able to describe them. Today I'd say they're a bit like espadrilles - only with a leather upper and a flatter sole.

Menorcan sandals, also known as "Avarcas," are a prime example of how a classic piece of clothing can achieve cult status. Originally created on the Balearic island as functional footwear for farmers and artisans, these sandals are now becoming increasingly popular in street style beyond Menorca , thanks in particular to their minimalist design. Miu Miu's elegant design in smooth leather with an elastic strap is particularly appealing right now – and perfectly captures the spirit of the slipper trend, which has gained significant popularity in recent seasons.
The Spanish sandals, reinterpreted by Miu Miu
I have to admit, I'd almost forgotten about these summer shoes. But when I saw the new Miu Miu campaign for Summer 2025, Miuccia Prada's luxurious version evoked a memory in me. A memory of a childhood summer—but also of a pair of incredibly comfortable and versatile shoes that I wore with great joy until they were completely worn out. And what sandals could be more timeless than those that have literally been worn for centuries?
