Each person defines success for themselves. For some, it might be a responsible position in their job, for others, a successful relationship, and for some, it might be achieving a social goal they are committed to. But all of these definitions have certain characteristics in common: When we are successful, we are at peace with ourselves, live in harmony with our values, and are satisfied with the life we ​​have created for ourselves.

2. You take time to structure your day

Most of us have a loooong to-do list with what feels like at least ten priority-one items. But our day only has 24 hours, and it helps a lot to structure that time and everything else that needs to be done during it. Successful people take the time to plan their day with all the upcoming tasks and topics.

Of course, it's always a good idea to remain flexible—but knowing what's most important at that moment helps a lot with organizing our thoughts. Whether you create this plan the night before for the next day or first thing in the morning is, of course, up to your personal preference.

3. They listen to their needs

This brings us to the next point: You often read that all successful people get up very early. That sounds as if no one who sets their alarm after 6 a.m. will amount to anything. That's nonsense, of course. For those who like to get up early and are most productive in the morning, this routine certainly works. But why should a night owl, whose natural bedtime is between midnight and 8 a.m. and who has their best ideas in the evening anyway, force themselves into such a time constraint?

It's much more sensible and healthier to listen to our bodies and their individual needs. This applies both to our daily planning and to the basics: getting enough sleep, consciously taking time for good food, and taking breaks when we need them.

4. You consciously seek balance to work

The topic of breaks is so important that it deserves its own section! Even the most successful entrepreneur needs time off to recharge their batteries. We often believe that to achieve a lot, we have to work virtually 24 hours a day. This is a fallacy: Our bodies and minds can't just power through and perform nonstop. Rest periods, during which we consciously withdraw to do something good for ourselves, are at least as important for productivity. This could be time for exercise, yoga, or quality time with family and friends. Whatever you need.

5. They stay away from energy vampires

Unfortunately, we can't always choose who we spend time with. This is especially true in the professional context, but sometimes there are people in our families who get on our last nerves. Even if encounters with difficult colleagues or the constantly nagging Aunt Erna can't (always) be avoided, we can at least limit the time (and thoughts!) we devote to such energy-sucking individuals. Where we have influence, we can and should try to surround ourselves with people who are good for us and give us strength—and who don't act like vampires.

We probably all immediately think of books, and it's clear: reading is a very important source of education that can open doors to new worlds for us. But it's not the only one! Podcasts, TV documentaries, and even series and travel can inspire us, and we can learn a great deal from them. Successful people train their eyes for exciting and inspiring things everywhere in their lives.

7. You consciously pause

We've already talked about the importance of breaks. And we also do our minds a great favor when we consciously pause regularly. It's actually not enough to just watch TV, read, or chat with a friend. Our thoughts also hop around like monkeys in a forest. Mindfulness is an effective tool for giving your mind real rest.

There are a number of misconceptions about meditation , as many people believe they have to sit down and not think about anything. The main thing, however, is to be completely present in the moment, in the here and now. We don't have to control our thoughts; we simply observe them. Even a few minutes a day—preferably in the morning—are enough to feel clearer, calmer, and more relaxed overall.

8. They are grateful and celebrate their successes

Gratitude is an important tool for influencing our mood and cultivating a positive mindset. To do this, before going to bed at night, remind yourself of a few things you were grateful for that day and that you're proud of. If you like, you can also keep track of this in a gratitude journal, but for many people, simply ending the day with these positive thoughts is enough.
