Queen Margrethe of Denmark has returned to her residence after her hospital stay. The palace has given the all-clear.

Good news from Denmark: Queen Margrethe (85) was able to leave Copenhagen's Rigshospitalet on Saturday morning. The Royal Palace announced in a brief official statement that the former monarch was back in her residence at Fredensborg Palace. "Her Majesty is doing well," reads the statement, published on the royal family's website.

Short treatment for a cold

The 85-year-old Margrethe was admitted to the hospital on Thursday due to a "cold." According to the palace, this was only done "for safety reasons." Nevertheless, the former queen canceled all her scheduled appointments for the coming days.

Her son, King Frederik (56), visited Margrethe in the hospital on the day of her admission. On Friday morning , the palace announced that she was "recovered and in good spirits" and was therefore expected to be released from the hospital this weekend.

Surprising abdication after 52 years

This is the second time in just a few months that the former queen has had to be treated at Rigshospitalet. In September 2024, she was admitted after a fall in her summer residence. These health problems are said to have been the reason why she surprisingly announced her abdication in a televised address on New Year's Eve after almost 52 years on the throne.

Two weeks later, her eldest son Frederik was officially crowned King of Denmark. Despite her abdication, Margrethe remains a fixture in the Danish royal family and regularly attends official appointments.
