Make-up mistakes for drooping eyelids: According to an expert, we should avoid them – and we all know them

Make-up mistakes for drooping eyelids: According to an expert, we should avoid them – and we all know them

Makeup should be fun, not frustrating. Expert Serena Goldenbaum knows this well and reveals the makeup mistakes we all make when it comes to droopy eyelids – and how to best avoid them.

Every face tells a very personal story through its curves, blemishes, and small wrinkles. Everything belongs to us and doesn't want to be missed. Even our slightly droopy eyelids. Yet we don't want to make them look bad – and that can easily happen if you apply makeup that doesn't flatter them. Makeup expert Serena Goldenbaum shares tips on how to flatter our droopy eyelids.

4 makeup mistakes that emphasize droopy eyelids

Who hasn't experienced this: Two or three colors have been beautifully blended together on the eyelid, and as soon as you open your eyes, you can't see any of it anymore because the droopy eyelid covers everything. To avoid such frustration, it helps to understand the effect of the eye. "To open the droopy eyelid, you would have to apply a slightly darker shade in the crease, i.e., under the eye bone. This visually recedes the somewhat heavy eyelid and opens the eye," says the expert. On the other hand, caution is advised when applying light eyeshadow on the eyelid.

Makeup mistake 1: Applying light eyeshadow all over the eyelid

Light, slightly glittery eyeshadows are found in almost every eyeshadow palette and are used regularly because they make us look more awake and fresh. However, they have a different effect on droopy eyelids. They further highlight the overhanging lid. According to Serena Goldenbaum, there's an important makeup rule that states: "Anything you apply light to, you highlight." If you want to use light eyeshadow, it's best to only use it in the inner corner of the eye. Besides the pitfalls of eyeshadow, there are also a few things to consider when using kohl.

Makeup mistake 2: Using black eyeliner

Let's be honest, who doesn't have black eyeliner in their makeup bag? What was considered a must-have in the 90s and 00s isn't a good friend for droopy eyelids. " I 'd recommend brown or gray-lavender," Goldenbaum says. " Black is too harsh. A droopy eyelid already makes the eye smaller, and we basically want to do everything we can to open it up and relieve that heaviness." The best way to do this is to choose a brown or mauve shade, apply the eyeliner to the outer corner, and blend it with a thin, soft brush. Smokey eyes are, of course, the exception. Black eyeliner is a welcome guest in these cases.

Liquid eyeliner is an absolute no-go for Serena Goldenbaum when it comes to droopy eyelids. The clear black lines along the eyelid have a framing, but also a confining effect. " I would rather apply a kohl pencil to the outer corner of the eye and then blend it upwards, rather than a soft shadow." If you want to emphasize the lower part of the eye, you can also draw a delicate line below the waterline. Caution: Not on the waterline, as this would compress the eye again.

Claudia Schiffer proved early on that droopy eyelids aren't a beauty flaw—they just need the right makeup technique. Her go-to look: dark kohl around the eyes and accentuated lashes.
Claudia Schiffer's drooping eyelids became her trademark as early as the 1990s.
With classic eye makeup, the focus is usually on the upper eyelid. However, with droopy eyelids, this area is often hidden by the lid above. Therefore, it's worth highlighting the droopy eyelid itself. A light shade under the eyebrow and accentuated eyelashes create a beautiful result.
Anyone who thinks you can't wear dark eye makeup with droopy eyelids will be convinced otherwise with this look from Jennifer Lawrence. The actress opts for a completely defined eye and expressive lashes.

Makeup mistake 4: Not preparing the eyelid

When skin loses elasticity, it needs to be better prepared before applying makeup to prevent the makeup from settling into fine lines. The eyes are no exception. If you want to prevent all your eyeshadow from sinking into your droopy eyelid, you should powder your eyes beforehand or apply an eyeshadow primer. Concealer is less recommended, because the more product you use, the more it can settle into the wrinkles.
